Recently I read a post from a high school friend who had a clever picture of a sign that read, “If the living could know what the dead know (we will alter that to, what the dead could know if the dead could know) the whole world would follow Jesus. My knee jerk reaction was, ya that’s right, but then I stopped to process it and here are my thoughts.
Phillipians 2:10-11 tells us that "Every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord..." Everyone includes the wicked and righteous alike. "Everyone above the earth, on the earth and below the earth." I'm not sure that if everyone could see past the grave that everyone would choose Jesus.
Many have received the gospel message and believed the truth and still walked away. We can't discount the Holy Spirits' work of conviction and believe that seeing the consequences of self will, is what is needed. True, Thomas needed to see to believe, but what did he want to see, a risen savior!
Jesus made it possible for everyone to meet Him now, through you and me working as humble conduits as message bearers working in cooperation with the Holy Spirit. We are the evidence, the light of the world, the reality of Christ working in and thru us. The Bible is a self-revealing document and if we are an honest student of it, we must see that it is an undeniable revelation of the reality of Gods love and His plan and will for humanity.
To say that, “if the lost could only see the end they’d choose Jesus,” seems to say that the power of the cross is not enough to “Draw all humanity to Jesus” John 12:32. It seems to imply a weakness of the gospel to lead others to a saving relationship with Christ, that God hasn’t done enough to ensure everyone has a chance to choose. An maybe leave Jesus out of the conversation. We can’t scare people to Jesus, can we? We can only scare people away from destruction, i.e. hell. And if our motive is to not find ourselves eternally lost, and not to find ourselves eternally with Jesus, we have a serious problem.
Our superpower is choice and God desires all to be saved. No one will ultimately go kicking and screaming to destruction just like no one will go kicking and screaming into heaven. Remember we will all recognize Jesus as Lord. Satan, once the top angel, lived in the reality of heaven and in the presents of God and found it within himself to reject all of that for selfish desire.
There are those who simply would not be happy in heaven, living in the presents of God regardless of knowledge of the future, which is knowable in scripture anyway. Though it breaks His heart, He will respect and honor our power of choice.
Lastly, is eternal life really our goal? It’s our reward, meeting Jesus’ face to face happens to be my goal. If we are just thinking about eternal life and Jesus is not at the center of that desire, some reevaluation may be in order.
Love you all
